F I N D S // Tile Inspiration & Sources
I love tile. There, I said it.
I have worked on a few bathroom projects recently and spent hours searching out the most beautiful and unique tile around. So to spare you the same arduous task, I have rounded up my favorite tile makers to inspire you.
Interested in a bathroom update in the Bay Area? Email me, let's talk tile.
Popham's striking encaustic cement tiles are handmade in Morocco and fully customizable. Their color palette is rich and their patterns are striking. You can create any color/pattern combo your heart desires (if you have the time and budget ;-).
I have a soft spot for Fireclay because they are based and MADE in California. They focus on sustainable design and do it in a seriously beautiful way. I am currently loving with their thin glazed brick (shown above in COTTON), they add a lot of depth and texture to a space. Don't get me wrong, their ceramics are incredible too. Everything Fireclay makes has a feeling of heritage. Their tiles are thick and the handmade nature creates so much character. Fireclay has a great custom program for their hand-painted tile which helps you make your design feel truly unique.
Handmade in Sausalito since 1948, Heath Ceramics is a Bay Area icon. Their earthy, minimal aesthetic is irresistible. An architects favorite, you can find Heath tiles in some of the most incredible and inspiring spaces. The natural variations in these handmade tiles create an organic vibe that I absolutely love. Insider Info: Heath's outlet in Sausalito has a 'tile shed' hidden in the back that offers second quality and overstock at amazing discounts (but don;t go telling everyone!!).
Tabarka is known for their hand-painted terracotta tiles. You can customize your design with their amazing color palette for a rich, rustic look. Tabarka also makes some other amazing products including encaustic cement tile and some of the most incredible parquet wood flooring I have ever seen. They just opened a showroom in LA that I am dying to get to!
Every cool bathroom and kitchen on Instagram seems to be clad with Clé at the moment. You may recognize the Zenith tile in the bathroom above and probably have it on at least one of your Pinterest boards. Clé is definitely my go-to for cement tiles. Their in-stock program is great for a quick turnaround. I love their solids just as much as their patterns. Deep, saturated colors in a matte cement tile makes for a luxe look.
COMMUNE x EQUISITE SURFACES
I think this could be the ultimate 'cool kid' collection of tiles. NY-based designer firm, Commune, teamed up with Exquisite Surfaces to create a range of cement tiles that are the definition of cool. The collaboration is dominated by graphic, navajo patterns in earth tones and some organic shapes in rich hues (see above). I spent a loooooooong time tracking down the tile below and hope to use it in a project soon (any takers?).
Okay, who is inspired?! I am just about ready to rip out my three bathrooms after all that!
(Nick, if you are reading this: I am kidding! Kind of.)
If you have seen a tile that you love but can't locate it, feel free to email me and I just might have the source!
PS If you recognize any of the designs listed as 'unknown' please send me the designer for proper credit! These are not my designs but I love them all!
